Management Accounts Hong Kong Explained

Management accounts are internal financial reports for a company's directors and management. They are not filed with any public registry. In Hong Kong, these accounts serve a different purpose from the statutory audited financial statements that every incorporated company must prepare annually under the Companies Ordinance (Cap. 622).

Management Accounting Hong Kong

Management accounting in Hong Kong provides timely financial information to support operational decision-making. Unlike statutory financial statements, management accounts are produced on a schedule the directors choose, typically monthly or quarterly, and follow internal formats rather than HKFRS or SME-FRS.

Internal Accounts Hong Kong

Internal accounts in Hong Kong draw from the same accounting records as the statutory financial statements. The key difference is audience and detail. Directors use them to monitor cash flow, gross margins and departmental performance. The auditors and the Companies Registry never see them.

Monthly Management Accounts

Monthly management accounts typically include a profit and loss account, a balance sheet and a cash flow statement. They are prepared from the general ledger and trial balance, often before year-end adjustments are posted. Timeliness matters more than precision. A close estimate delivered within ten days of month-end is more useful than exact figures that take six weeks.

Hong Kong Company Management Reporting

Two obligations shape the reporting framework for a Hong Kong company. First, directors must keep accounting records sufficient to show and explain the company's transactions, and must retain those records for seven years. Second, those same records form the basis of the financial statements that undergo the statutory audit each year by a HKICPA-registered certified public accountant holding a practising certificate. The audit requirement under Cap. 622 is separate from the directors' need for management reports; both draw on the same underlying data.
